Florence's Fury

from $35.00

“Florence's Fury”: A Depiction of Nature’s Raw Power and Humanity’s Generous Spirit. As I saw the devastation left behind by Hurricane Florence in September 2018, I found myself profoundly moved—not just by the raw power of nature, but also by the overwhelming beauty and compassion I received from my community. I created this painting as a result of the storm of emotions I was feeling during this time.

I wanted to capture the immense strength of this hurricane, swirling relentlessly over the southeastern US with its keen eye focused on my hometown, Wilmington. I tried to bring to life the sheer force and power of Florence in the swirling white and gray clouds that dominate the right side of the painting. These stormy clouds contrast sharply with the deep blues of the ocean, these deep colors are notoriously challenging to achieve with watercolors, yet critical to the sense of foreboding I aimed to convey in this piece. As the eye of the hurricane is the focal point that clearly draws your attention, the left side of the piece portrays a different, equally significant story. The green landmass, outlined in white, paints the map of areas impacted, highlighting the human lives and communities affected by this natural disaster.

Florence's Fury's is more than an endeavor to depict the ferocity of a hurricane. It is a tribute to the enduring human spirit. Amid the destruction, there was a remarkable outpouring of support from my community and beyond. I witnessed neighbors helping neighbors, and volunteers arriving from distant places to lend aid, comfort and to help rebuild. This artwork embodies that dual narrative: nature's capacity for immense destruction and humanity’s infinite capacity for compassion and aid.
