"Mirror of No Regrets" (Coastal Collection ~ Sea Bird Series)
“Mirror of No Regrets” is a watercolor painting that illustrates my perspective on life and relationships. This painting is a tribute to the lessons and growth that come from our most vulnerable connections. Picture a stunning white egret, a majestic member of the heron family, poised gracefully in the shallow water of Mill creek, its mirror image replicated below in the still water. Golden reeds, gentle and pervasive, envelop the scene, offering not just a habitat to the egret, but a frame through which reflection occurs. In their warm embrace, the soft earth tones of the reeds provide a backdrop for contemplation, a whisper of life's recurring patterns where beauty emerges from dualities—joy entangled with sorrow, past interwoven with the present.
The morning that I came upon this magnificent egret began with a stunning sunrise, invigorating soft salt air breezes and mesmerizing beauty that can only be experienced by boat in my charming seaside hometown of Wilmington, NC. I was in a relationship with someone who, while no longer in my life, contributed to an important chapter of my life which greatly influenced my personal growth and to the inspiration for several of my paintings in my Coastal Collection. It was during those last memorable moments on the creek, upon returning to the dock, as I hurriedly unloaded the boat, that I caught a glimpse of this elegant creature and its mirrored image. I stopped everything and just starred in awe at nature’s beauty. One of the most tranquil moments that I’ve ever witnessed was that moment on Mill Creek. I had no idea that it would be the last time I would step foot on that dock. A fleeting second of such poignant beauty contrasted against the inevitabilities of change.
As I reflected on that unforgettable day, I was inspired to create a painting originally thought to be titled "Mirror of Regret", illustrating the complexity of life’s relationships. Through the creation of this painting, I thankfully began to shift my focus away from the regret of a meaningful relationship ending and once again being alone; to the gifts held within those fleeting, but profound moments of connection and shared experiences. As I was completing this painting, the title became clear to me, it would be called "Mirror of No Regrets”. A reflection of my shifting perspective from regret, toward the appreciation of every interaction within a relationship, not for its conclusion, but for the opportunity of individual growth that every connection offers.
This artwork invites you into a dialogue of introspection—consider the relationships in your own life. What wisdom have you gained from those you have loved and lost? May this piece inspire you to reflect positively, not with regret, but with gratitude.
