Tug At The Heart of Eagle Island (Seaside Collection)

from $45.00

I created "Tug at the Heart of Eagle Island" hoping to recover the spirit and preserve the story of the old tugboat that quietly rested on Eagle Island throughout my entire life, tugging at the hearts of so many travelers who passed it by. This tugboat, named Isco, was abandoned in the 1960’s at the edge of the Cape Fear River and became a notable Wilmington landmark.  This example of strength, once tasked with guiding others out of tumultuous seas was simply discarded and anchored at the edge of Eagle Island for decades, now succumbing to nature’s harsh embrace.  Despite its small stature compared to its historic neighbor, the 729’ USS North Carolina Battleship, Isco still tugged at our hearts and is deserving of a place in local history.

I received a photo of Isco from a friend’s father in the late 80’s, not fully understanding, that many years later I would be compelled to tell its tale through my art.  Encouraged by an article I came across recently, along with the suggestion by an influential supporter of my work, I felt compelled to ensure this tug’s memory lives on.

I began by painting the circular windows, like wise old eyes, bearing witness to decades of neglect.  Paying particular attention to distressing the weather-beaten wooden hull endeavoring to convey the whispered tales of the tug’s dangerous voyages, storms weathered, and years of noble service to those in need.  As your eyes move to the background, the distant trees standing as silent guardians, observing the sun’s gentle descent, while softly speaking to the end of days for this decaying tug.  The reflections in the water, mirror the eagle’s nest in the distance, whispering the identity of the Island of Isco’s final resting place, while simultaneously representing nature’s enduring perseverance.

May my portrayal of this iconic vessel prompt you to reflect on your own personal journey, while offering you an emotional bridge connecting your past and present to your future.  Like Isco, many of us have felt alone and abandoned, but found the strength to continue.  The tugboat’s tale combines purpose, strength, and resilience, while pulling at the heart of anyone that took the time to appreciate its relevance.  By viewing this painting of Isco, you have ensured the memory of this old tug lives on.
